Brett and I wanted to take a second to honor both our moms today. I literally donโ€™t know what weโ€™d do without both of you!

Denise has been there EVERY step of the way and has dropped everything at a momentโ€™s notice to help however she can - whether itโ€™s spending hours along Brettโ€™s side at the hospital or helping take care of our kids. My mom has been such an incredible support and help as well - doing laundry, cooking meals, and staying with our kids at the house so I can come and go freely to the hospital. WE LOVE YOU BOTH!!!

Now for an update on Brett:

Praise report! They approved for him to be moved from ICU into a regular room as soon as one is ready. His hemoglobin and all his blood levels look good as well. He also stood up and walked a few steps from the bed to a chair. It took a lot out of him, but itโ€™s good to see him out of the bed.

Now for the tricky part. They just stopped his Heparin (blood thinner via IV). They started him on an oral blood thinner called Xarelto. The plan is to monitor him for a few days in the hospital on the Xarelto and see what happens. When he had the spontaneous bleed 5 days ago, they believe it was a result of being on Eloquis, which is like a โ€œcousinโ€ blood thinner medicine to Xarelto.

Not going to lie - it makes me VERY nervous that they are putting him on another oral blood thinner. But - his vascular doctor here is WONDERFUL and has a better grasp on Brettโ€™s situation than any doctor heโ€™s worked with before, so that gives us confidence.

Our biggest challenge right now with Brettโ€™s treatment plan is this: He needs the blood thinners to keep blood circulating through his leg and prevent additional clotting. But, the blood thinners could cause more spontaneous internal bleeding, which is incredibly dangerous especially if it's around his vital organs. They are trying to find the delicate balance between both. Ultimately, his life is way more important than his limb. The doctors are doing their best to give him the best possible outcome on all fronts.

Keep in mind that Brett had a separate spontaneous retroperitoneal hematoma 4 years ago. There was no cause, and he wasnโ€™t on any sort of blood thinner. So we know his body is prone to this even WITHOUT blood thinners.

For today, please pray for the following:

  • Rest for Brett. Heโ€™s in a good bit of pain as to be expected post surgery. He doesnโ€™t love taking pain meds, but he needs them.
  • Wisdom and discernment for us and the medical team regarding the blood thinners.
  • A miracle of FULL circulation to his leg without the need for blood thinners.ย
  • No more blood clots, and no more internal bleeds ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Love to all,

Meredith
